GME Resources at MedStar Health

GME Resources at MedStar Health

Written by Bill Olmsted, Guardian disability insurance specialist with 25 years advising medical residents and fellows.

MedStar Health trains nearly 1,200 residents and fellows across more than 70 ACGME-accredited programs at 10 hospitals in the Washington, DC and Baltimore regions. GME training is concentrated at Georgetown University Hospital and Washington Hospital Center, with additional training sites at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital, MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, and several others across the system.

This page maps official GME support resources available to MedStar trainees. It also points to one separate planning issue — the GSI disability insurance path available to eligible trainees — that may not surface clearly through any single institutional channel in a system this size.

This page is maintained by MDGSI as an independent educational resource. It is not produced by, endorsed by, sponsored by, or affiliated with MedStar Health.

Official GME and wellbeing resources

MedStar Health maintains dedicated GME-specific resources through its Center for Wellbeing and the medstargme.net portal. The resources below are maintained by MedStar Health directly.

Wellbeing and mental health

  • GME Wellbeing Resources — the primary GME-specific wellbeing page. Covers mental health access, EAP, crisis resources, coaching, and Wellness Champions program contacts.
  • MedStar Center for Wellbeing — system-wide physician wellbeing programs including peer support, financial wellness tools, resilience coaching, and backup childcare.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP): SupportLinc, available 24/7 at 866-765-3277. Expedited mental health access for residents: 202-944-5400 during business hours.

Compensation and benefits

  • GME Salary and Benefits — stipends, health insurance options, dental, vision, disability coverage, retirement, and other standard benefits.
  • GME Compensation and Benefits Detail — GME-specific extras including emergency loan access, concierge services, and portable disability coverage details.

Financial wellness

  • Retirement counseling, student loan coaching, and tax assistance are available through MedStar’s financial wellness programs. Details are on the GME compensation and benefits page above.

GME office and institutional information

A note on navigating a large system

MedStar is a 10-hospital system. Training sites, program offices, and benefits contacts are distributed across institutions in DC and Baltimore. Most official GME resources — benefits enrollment, wellness services, EAP access, financial counseling — are centrally available through the system-level portals above, regardless of which hospital a trainee is based at.

For trainees rotating across sites, or at affiliate hospitals with smaller GME footprints, the medstargme.net portal and the Center for Wellbeing are the most reliable starting points for any support question.

One separate planning issue

MedStar is a 10-hospital system. Benefits resources are centralized, but in a large distributed environment, not every planning issue gets equal visibility across sites and programs. This is one that doesn’t always surface on its own.

Guardian offers a Guaranteed Standard Issue (GSI) disability insurance policy to eligible residents and fellows training at MedStar Health. It is a Guardian product, not an institutional benefit — individually owned, not employer-provided, and available only during the active training window.

Two things are worth understanding before graduation, not after:

First, eligibility closes at the end of training.

Second, Guardian must be the first individual disability insurance application a trainee submits. An application to another carrier filed first permanently closes access to this option — regardless of health status.

The deeper explanation is in the MDGSI Buyer’s Guide.
